Jeff Milner's backmasking site is a great demonstration of top-down v. bottom-up processing.
Instructions:
1. Click on a song on the right-hand side
2. Listen to the music forward, then backwards.
3. When listening backwards, try to make out what is being said.
4. After listening 1 or 2 times to the backwards song, reveal the "lyrics," and listen to it again.
5. Does having an idea of what is being said change how you perceived the backwards "lyrics"?
6. You should be able to "hear" the lyrics after you have read them, and expect to hear them.
7. This change in how you perceived what your senses processed demonstrates "top-down processing." Your expectations and context lead you to perceive what you sensed in a specific way.
